ANCIENT GREEK, Aeolis, Cyme, AR tetradrachm, ca. mid-2nd century BC, stephanophoric type, NGC Ch XF / strike 4/5, surface 4/5. BMC 83; Oakley 78. 16.76 grams. Diademed head of the Amazon Cyme right, wearing tainia / Horse prancing right; below raised foreleg, one-handled skyphos (cup) below; AMΦIKTYΩN below; all within wreath. Stephanophoric refers to the wreath border on the reverse and this style became popular around the eastern Aegean soon after Athens introduced the type as the now-named "New Style" tetradrachms. The engraved dies created a somewhat convex obverse and concave reverse and the coins became especially popular in the city-states of Aeolis-Myrina, Aeolis-Kyme, and Magnesia ad Maeandrum.
